"A wildly unique album..."
Zan Agzigian - KPBX  Spokane Public Radio "Soundspace with Zan" (September 2018)

"Los Angeles-based flutist Joanne Lazzaro and her Global Music Award Silver Medal-winning ensemble Dreamcatcher have honored the genius of American composer Katherine Hoover with a sumptuous world premiere recording of Hoover's 1999 masterpiece Canyon Shadows. The five-movement musical narrative, crafted with consummate audio fidelity and magical realist coloration by the ensemble, is a heady conflation of Native American and modern tonalities punctuated by percussive elements both ancient and contemporary. The result, a sonic nimbus that both illuminates and nourishes the soul."

“Under The Stars represents a fascinating interaction between artist and environment. Listeners who enjoy the classic Paul Horn recording as well as the music of artists like R. Carlos Nakai, Coyote Oldman, and Mary Youngblood will find a lot to like in this enchanting album that combines the earthiness of the Native flute and the vastness of the infinite sky.”

“The night sky and the planets within are so inspirational to so many artists of all different stripes and colors. Add to that list Native American flute player Joanne Lazzaro who released Under The Stars in 2015. Recorded live at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California, the twelve-track album is just solo flute playing and the sound is quite expressive and magical.”

"Path of the Departed Souls is a beautiful and haunting piece. It makes you feel like you are really walking down a long path somewhere in the mountains above the clouds where spirits wander and memories of life abound. Let the flute be your Shaman and go deep inside yourself to find answers to questions you may have."

Bill Binkelman, Zone Music Reporter (5 March 2016)
“I found the blend of styles and tempos entertaining and Lazzaro handles each change-up with complete aplomb. Equally (and maybe more so) impressive is her mastery of an assortment of Native flutes, including both the drone flute and full double flute. The varied pitch and tone of her flutes is a huge contributing factor in how refreshing the assortment of music is on the album through multiple playings.....Simply put, Under the Stars is a must-have if you enjoy Native flute music…”

R J Lannan, Zone Music Reporter (10 March 2016)
"Imagine a silent night full of stars. You are standing in the dim light of the edifice known as the Mt. Wilson Observatory in the San Gabriel mountains just outside of Los Angeles. Just as you gather your thoughts, a single Native American flute melody fills the silence. Breathtaking, isn't it? Of course, you have to be listening to Joanne Lazzaro's new album Under The Stars to get the sense of how small you are in the universe, but how important you are to that same universe." Rating: Very Good

"Under The Stars" is a very bright and memorable debut. I am sure you will want to listen to this incredible album over and over again..."Lift your eyes up, feel the voice of the skies. Debut Album Press Release  - March 1, 2015
Under The Stars - Joanne Lazzaro, solo Native American flutes

Inspired by Paul Horn’s Inside the Taj Mahal, and her long-time association with astronomers, Joanne sought out a remote location with unique acoustics and tremendous scientific significance: the 100-inch telescope dome at the historic Mount Wilson Observatory. Recorded live on location, this stunning album captures one night, one take per track, using no added studio effects, with no overdubbing. Listeners describe the album as “Moving,” “Haunting,” and “Ethereal.”

Joanne’s debut solo album Under the Stars features the best performances of the three-hour recording session as an immersive, first-person experience. “Playing from the heart” in the Native American tradition, Joanne embarks on a spiritual journey, creating musical themes inspired by the night sky and star lore as told by Native Americans. Using a variety of flutes in different keys and modes, she tells musical story that begins at sunset with Evening Star Song and ends at sunrise with Lark Who Sang His Song to the Sun Every Morning.

Joanne Lazzaro brings a unique new voice to world flute music, drawing on her background in classical flute and extensive experience with the Native American flute. She’s best known for her ability to create extended improvisations on both her original tunes and well-known songs.

A classically trained orchestral flutist, Joanne has shared the stage with artists as varied as CeCe Winans, James Galway, Billy Childs and Serj Tankian. She’s performed around the world, including Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Monaco, and Easter Island-Chile. Her US concerts have ranged from New York City, to Chicago - Symphony Center, to Los Angeles - Disney Hall.

Joanne gratefully acknowledges the Mount Wilson Observatory, and the Art Institute - Inland Empire for their generous support in the making of Under the Stars.
